Elkins & Johansson To Perform at UNC-Chapel Hill

It’s been awhile since we’d heard about Julie Elkins, formerly with the highly acclaimed but short-lived Montana group “Kane’s River”.  But we got a message from Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, in North Carolina asking us to publish an event coming up shortly for them.

As part of Morehead’s new Holiday Stars Concert Series, Elkins and Johansson will play some holiday and bluegrass favorites while surrounded by a star show in the planetarium’s fulldome theater.

These local musicians have been playing bluegrass together for almost twenty years.

Julie Elkins, originally from Montana, began playing banjo as a child and was invited to join her first band before she was sixteen. She has played in various bluegrass groups and has a family history of bluegrass musicians. Elkins won an International Bluegrass Music Association award for her contribution to "Back To The Well" with the Daughters of Bluegrass in 2006.

Jan Johansson left Sweden for North Carolina in 1989. When he arrived, he started playing at many bluegrass festivals with bands such as Roby Huffman and the Bluegrass Cut-Ups. He is a multi-instrumentalist who spends his time teaching music lessons when he is not performing. Johansson has sent many of his students on to successful music careers, as well.

Elkins and Johansson both spent time with the renowned group New Vintage before joining together to start their own band.

Catch this talented pair in Chapel Hill this holiday season.

Tickets are $16 ($12 for Morehead members and UNC students). Get them before it’s too late! Visit http://www.moreheadplanetarium.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page&filename=concerts.html  or call 919-962-1236.
