Wife of Doc Watson Passes

Image634893015598814356Just six months after her husband, the legendary Doc Watson, Rosa Lee Carlton Watson of Deep Gap, NC is gone at age 81.

She had suffered a series of strokes and had been in a nursing home for more than 18 months. She died of natural causes on Thanksgiving day at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, NC.  Rosa Lee was the daughter born on February 5, 1931 to celebrated old-time fiddler Gaither Carlton and Lucy Robbins Carlton.

Doc and Rosa Lee performed together on occasion and co-wrote “Your Long Journey,” which was featured on the Grammy Award-winning album “Raising Sand” by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.

Funeral services for Rosa Lee Carlton Watson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 25, 2012, at 2:00 o'clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Reverend Gary Watson and Reverend Sherrill Wellborn. Burial will follow in the Doc Watson Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. At other times friends may call at the home of the daughter Nancy Ellen Watson, 217 Sunny Hill Lane, Deep Gap. The family requests that anyone visiting not wear any scented body products.

Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Doc and Rosa Lee Watson Grandchildren Educational Fund, in care of Karen Norris.
