The event is free and open to the public.  However patrons are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Second Harvest Community Food Bank, which supports hunger relief agencies in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas.
The food bank, a member of Feeding America, is the area’s link between an abundant food supply and people in need.

The event will be held Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28, 2013, in Coleman Hawkins Park at Felix Street Square in downtown St. Joseph and is being sponsored by several business organizations in the St. Joseph community, including the event’s Presenting Sponsor, Freudenthal Home Health.

This is the fourth year for the event. Last year’s event raised over $1,600 and 1,500 pounds of food in support of the food bank’s efforts.

Food and concessions will be available to patrons of the event. More information can be found at Bluegrass Battles Hunger’s website, www.bluegrassbattleshunger.com.

Concert headliners The Grascals are among the most beloved and acclaimed bands on today’s bluegrass scene. The group has earned accolades from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA), including Bluegrass Band of the Year in 2010 and Instrumental Group of the Year three years in a row (2011, 2012, 2013). In addition, the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) named The Grascals their Emerging Artist of the Year in 2005 and Entertainer of the Year in both 2006 and 2007.

The Grascals’ cutting-edge modern bluegrass is delivered with a deep knowledge of, and admiration for, the work of the music’s founding fathers. Timely yet timeless, The Grascals make music that is entirely relevant to the here and now, yet immersed in traditional values of soul and musicianship. It’s a unique sound that has earned Grammy nominations for three of their releases (The Grascals, 2005; Long List of Heartaches, 2006; Life Finds a Way, 2013) for Best Bluegrass Album.
