Amos Washington Ames was born in Pennsylvania on February 22, 1841, moved to Illinois in 1845, then to Iowa in 1855.  He enlisted in the army on July 25, 1861, and was in Company "H" 4 Iowa Regiment.  He was later appointed to Corporal.

Sarah Elizabeth Ball was born in Indiana on September 13, 1846 and moved to Iowa in the early 1850s.

Amos and Sarah were married November 15, 1865, and the first of their nine children was born June 6, 1866.

Amos farmed his land until 1908 when another family moved in with the Ameses to farm the fields.  After that, he raised vegetables and fruit, had a vineyard and large orchard.

Amos had a cat named Thomas Henry, and Sarah was very nearsighted, a genetic trait that has been passed on through the generations.

Amos died February 27, 1913.  Sarah died August 1, 1926.
